The Western Connect Magazine had the privilege of interviewing Kasturi Chellaraja Wilson, the Managing Director of Hemas Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd, Hemas Surgical and Diagnostics Pvt Ltd, and Hemas Logistics and Maritime Cluster. Ms. Wilson shared her success story and how she has stood tall under her grit and firmness. Fiercely passionate, self-inspired, and sharp-thinking, Kasturi is nurturing a culture at her workplace that helps people to drive their best selves at work.

Can you tell us about your early days in the industry and your journey to where you are today?
I began my career as an Audit Trainee at Someswaran Jayewickreme & Co (SJMS) and was the Director of Consulting and Audit Manager at SJMS. Before joining Hemas in 2002, I was the Financial Controller at Confifi Hotels. Since my journey with Hemas, I have been involved in various managerial roles, including General Manager of Finance for Hem Tours, Head of Hemas’ Shared Service Unit, and Chief Process Officer of Hemas Holdings. Executing the responsibilities of Hemas Holdings, I oversaw the group’s processes, technological setup, infrastructure, and financial and HR-shared solutions.

What led you to become the Managing Director of Hemas Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd, Hemas Surgical and Diagnostics Pvt Ltd, and Hemas Logistics and Maritime Cluster?
I moved on to my first business role as Managing Director for Hemas Logistics and Maritime Cluster, which comprised the industry’s maritime, aviation, and logistics operations. I took over my current role in 2016 as the Managing Director of Hemas Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd and Hemas Surgical and Diagnostics Pvt Ltd. While spearheading these challenging sectors that represent over 50 percent of the group’s revenue and earnings, and I also serve as a Non-Executive Director of Morison PLC and Capital Alliance.

Can you tell us about the challenges you have faced in your career?
Being part of the growth diversification of Hemas, I faced many hurdles while balancing my personal and professional life. One of the complex challenges I encountered at the beginning of my career was undertaking full-time work as a single mom – balancing motherhood and profession. Another tough decision I had to undertake was when I took up the role of CPO (IT and Process) despite my financial sector strengths. Accompanied by a great support system, including my parents, helpers, superiors, colleagues, and friends, I saw through tough times. My mother has remained the most significant motivation and guide throughout all the circumstances. And when it comes to my career, my best mentor is the company’s Chairman, Husein Esufally, who believed in my potential.

What is your vision for Hemas and the pharmaceutical industry?
For Hemas, as a group with a rich history of over 70 years, which has served every Sri Lankan household operating in the wellness and healthcare segments, it is essential to focus on building for new – to innovate, excel, and strive for agility over security to lead disruption. Proactive work with a disruptive mindset can keep pace with consumer dynamics and environmental changes, including new ways to gain accessibility to customers.

What advice would you give to emerging entrepreneurs striving to make a successful career in this field?
For entrepreneurs looking at the pharmaceutical industry, it’s essential always to continue learning and keep pushing the envelope. Innovation and technological advances are changing the way we do business. Always remember to stay passionate and true to yourself.
