German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Metro Vancouver on Tuesday during his four-day visit to Canada. He toured the Burnaby-based fuel cell company Cellcentric and held a roundtable discussion with German and Canadian business representatives in Vancouver. Later, he met with Premier David Eby and took a boat tour of Vancouver Harbour.

Steinmeier also visited the University of British Columbia’s Smart Hydrogen Energy District, which will soon be home to a hydrogen fuelling station. On Monday, Steinmeier was in Ottawa when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that a German plane had airlifted 58 Canadians out of Sudan amid escalating conflict in the country’s capital.

On Wednesday, the German president will continue his Canadian trip by travelling north to Yellowknife and Tuktoyaktuk. He will meet with government officials and tour the Canadian Armed Forces Joint Operations Centre in the North. At a reception in Ottawa, Steinmeier spoke about the need to protect the values of inclusion and the rule of law against growing global autocratic rule.
